Stenopeic Glasses: What are they?
They are called “Stenopeic Glasses” or “Pinhole” or Pinhole are a different type of glasses from the ones we are used to seeing in the everyday life. Their frame is quite similar to regular glasses while it is usually black and plastic and its lenses are perforated!
Stenopeic Glasses: What are they used for?
The eye surface receives light from a wide array of angles and the images can appear blurred as they pass through the eye structure if the lens or cornea are not in a perfect condition. The improper bending of light causes refractive errors such as myopia, hyperopia, presbyopia, and astigmatism to be highly noticeable. In such case, the light coming in is not hitting the exact ideal spot of vision in the back of the eye that we call the retina.
When the user of the Stenopeic Glasses looks through any of the many small holes, the pinholes may have the ability to bring about clearer vision in all these conditions. The holes have the effect of reducing the angles from which light is received and direct the rays of light to precisely hit the retina. The improvement in Visual Acuity can be striking and manifest in improved sharpness, contrast, and brightness of the image.
Whatever the problem, myopia, astigmatism, hyperopia, one can see more clearly through a hole.
Stenopeic Glasses: Why does one suddenly see more clearly when wearing them?
To answer the question of whether perforated glasses can improve vision, we must first refer to the scientific basis on which their operation and design are based.
An object, therefore, has peripheral rays that are refracted in the glass of the eye, which, as mentioned, is called the cornea or lens and focus on its back, the macula. In Stenopeic glasses or “Pinhole Glasses” the convergence of the rays is avoided because the eye is forced to look through the small holes.
Stenopeic Glasses essentially use the scientific principle that light travels in a straight line and through the narrow holes creates the phenomenon that you observe when you wear them. The images suddenly become sharper and clearer while you are not wearing any kind of prescription glasses.
Stenopeic Glasses: In which cases are they useful?
Stenopic Glasses are useful for treating eye strain. As they change the focus of the eye and prevent some intensity and glow of the light sources around, the eye can relax a little more. This can also be helpful in reducing myopia if one does not carry prescription glasses. However, people who have more than 6 degrees of myopia will probably not find stenopeic glasses useful because they cannot get rid of blurring completely.
In conclusion, Stenopeic Glasses do not improve vision, nor are they better than conventional ones, while they do not help in the practice of the eyes but can contribute to their relaxation. Maybe they are useful only in case someone has forgotten the normal glasses, e.g. on a trip. They should generally be used for a short time and never when the user performs potentially dangerous activities such as driving.
Stenopeic Glasses have a low cost while you can get them online or from your optician.
